Strength beyond Measure:  Reading for Ingenuity and Resilience

Dr. Brinson’s passion and advocacy for reading is reflected in the "Strength beyond Measure:  Reading for Ingenuity and Resilience initiative," as well as the award-winning, national, community-based, literacy programs she founded and directs, "Boys Booked on Barbershops and Girls Booked on Beautyshops."

Strength beyond Measure: Reading for Ingenuity and Resilience:  A reading initiative that demonstrates the effectiveness of culturally sustaining literature as curricula to foster genuine equity and inclusion and facilitate students’ holistic growth (e.g., cognitive, social, and emotional).  Provided are active learning strategies for use with culturally sustaining books to abolish Implicit Invisibility and resulting “isms” that include racism, classism, sexism, ableism, and ageism.  Spotlighted is the importance of bridging gaps over past historical omissions.  Highlighted is information about ‘more than a handful’ of individuals from diverse populations who made notable contributions to American history for fair and balanced historical perspectives for students.  Featured are book-extended activities to further engage students in the active learning process; nurture student ownership; and, generate additional student-led inquiries and investigations via critical-, creative-, divergent-reflective-, and forward thinking.  Also, disseminated is a clearinghouse of professional resources, and a comprehensive bibliography of culturally sustaining books to advance ingenuity and resilience, positive self-attributes (e.g., self-love, self-worth, and self-confidence), and to eliminate said “isms.” "Strength beyond Measure: Reading for Ingenuity and Resilience" is a reading initiative designed for viable home/school/community partnerships (e.g., community-based libraries) to embrace all children and their families (e.g., diverse populations of color, special needs, and foster care).

Boys Booked on Barbershops and Girls Booked on Beautyshops:  The awarding-winning literacy programs were featured on the NBC Nightly News, “Making a Difference in the Community,” and they are designed to increase reading opportunities; to advance literacy development/reading skills; and, to counter aliteracy (lack of motivation to read).  Reading nooks with literacy tips for parents and a variety of high-interest, culturally sustaining books that she reviews and recommends based on the demographics of regular patrons are set up in barbershops, beautyshops, and other community sites across the nation for youth (1 – 18) to read/be read to while waiting to get into the barber/beautician’s chair. Picture it, children reading or being read to while waiting to get into the barber/beautician’s chair!
